![]() Mayor McHale Two more Bergen County municipalities confirmed today they received subpoenas this week from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. A dozen North Jersey towns confirmed getting subpoenas yestetday, and confirmations from Closter and Dumont yesterday brought the total to 14. The subpoenas request records related to Bergen County Democratic Organization Chairman Joseph Ferriero, attorney Dennis Oury, utilities chief Leonard Kaiser and David Spatz, the president of Governmental Grants Consulting, a firm in which all four men shared an interest. The FBI appears to be investigating how the firm’s principals used their political positions to obtain business for it. Since late May, the scope of the subpoenas from the U.S. Attorney’s Office has broadened. During that time, at least 36 subpoenas have been distributed throughout North Jersey. The initial subpoenas requested information about Oury and Governmental Grants Consulting. Oury not only serves as counsel for the BCDO, but is the attorney for the Bergen County Improvement Authority and several North Jersey municipalities. Kaiser is the director of the Bergen County Utilities Authority. The most-recent subpoenas demand information about Ferriero and Kaiser, as well as several entities connected with Ferriero and the non-profit Paramus Affordable Housing Corp. Dumont Borough Attorney Gregg Paster confirmed the borough received a subpoena this week. It is the first subpoena Dumont has received during the current federal probe. Paster said the borough appointed Governmental Grants Consulting as its grant consultant in December 2005, just weeks after former BCDO Executive Director Matthew McHale was elected mayor. Spatz appeared two months later at a council executive session and recommended that officials apply for parks and recreation grants, according to meeting minutes from February 2006. “No fee was paid, no applications were processed and no invoices were ever sent to the borough by Governmental Grants,” Paster said. McHale didn't return a call for comment.
