Program intended to offer more services at lower cost The twice a week pickup will be effective as of April 30, 2007 and will be implemented under the following schedule: •West of Washington Avenue (New Milford side) garbage collection will be Mondays and Thursdays. •East of Washington Avenue (Cresskill side) will be Tuesdays and Fridays. Besides improving garbage pickup, the Borough of Dumont remains committed to recycling. Under the new agreement, the following schedule will be conducted regarding the recycling schedule: •Recycling will be the entire town on Wednesdays. Paper and commingled recyclables on alternating weeks. Cans and bottles will be first starting on Wednesday, May 2. The recycling calendar distributed in the earlier part of the year will remain current and will be followed under the new service. “Having twice a week pickup can only benefit our quality of life,” said Council President Ellen Zamechansky. The new service comes on the heels of the Borough’s creation of, and approval by, the Dumont Environmental Commission, which is designed and intended to work with the Borough and its residents to address issues such as cleanliness, litter, and garbage. “When we throw out our garbage, we should be mindful as to how we are disposing of it,” said Environmental Commission Chairwoman Jennifer Holdsworth. “By putting garbage in cans with secure lids or well-tied bags, we can cut down on the likelihood of it being strewn throughout the neighborhood, thus cutting down on litter,” added Holdsworth. The Borough of Dumont recently raised the fine for property maintenance, which includes issues related to garbage, to a range of $200 to $1,000, depending on the municipal court’s discretion.
