EDITORIAL: What team are you on? |
July 2008 Edition
By Carmine DeMarco, Publisher, Dumont Dispatch When I was growing up - and I'm guessing it's the same now - you had your favorite teams. And you couldn't mix them, and root for two local teams in the same sport. Nope - either you were a Yankees fan, or you were a Mets fan. You were a Giants fan, or you were a Jets fan.
We're tribal that way, us human beings. While we strive for autonomy, individuality, and self-determination, at the same time we have a competing primal need for belonging, for being part of something greater than just ourselves. And part of that is identifying ourselves with groups that share common interests, goals, or beliefs - whether it's being active in the Elks, or being a member of a particular church congregation, or belonging to a political party. |

Community turns out for Dumont Day celebration and 5K fundraiser |
September 2007 Edition
Dumont residents young and old turned out in force on Saturday, September 8 to enjoy the various rides, amusements, food, entertainment, and fun offered at the Borough’s annual Dumont Day celebration. The festivities began with the Dumont “Fall Run for Fun”, which included kids’ “fun runs” and a USATF-certified 5K race which boasted over 200 finishers. The 5K was won by one of Dumont’s own, 21-year-old Brian Lang. The activities fully got underway after the race, and included numerous inflatable amusements for children, pony rides, petting zoo, face painting, vendors, food, live entertainment from the stage, informational booths, and more. The day culminated later that evening with spectacular fireworks at Dumont High School, underscored by the sounds of the Saddle River Valley Concert Band, serenading the crowd with show tunes and patriotic music. |

DPW Notice on Storm Drains |
September 2007 Edition
Over the last several months, Dumont has been subjected to numerous heavy rains and storm events. This has led to a number of trees and branches falling and road flooding. The DPW has been working with the tree contractor, sometimes around the clock to clear the debris. We are also working to keep storm drain systems working, but there are times when the amount of rain simply cannot be handled by the system. Also, we are finding a lot of household garbage and recyclables in the system. We are requesting residents to please put their garbage and recyclables in sturdy 32 gallon cans, and to keep cans out of the gutter. This will help alleviate some of the rubbish collecting on the tops of storm drains. |

Message from Mayor Matt McHale |
August 2007 edition
As summer comes to a close, great things are happening in the Borough of Dumont. Memorial Park will soon have a new active walkway for all of our residents to enjoy. Pershing Street’s upgrade will soon be concluded with the installation of new sidewalks, curbing, and speed bumps. These two important projects will be concluded for Dumont Day, which will be held on September 8th. The Borough has also made significant headway with its internal finances. In July, we asked and were granted release from the State of New Jersey’s oversight and also received $500,000.00 in extraordinary aid. Over the past three years, Dumont has been able to secure $1.6 million in discretionary aid. However, the Borough remains committed to ensuring that your tax dollars are accounted for and spent appropriately. Coming up in the month, the Borough will be addressing and concluding our Master Plan and will limit the construction of “McMansions” and encourage commercial/residential development to revitalize our downtown district. Residents are encouraged to read the Master Plan report, which is available free of charge at the Borough Clerk’s office. Lastly, I urge all of our non-profit and volunteer organizations to use the Dumont Dispatch to communicate vital information related to their success. The Dumont Dispatch is a phenomenal resource that has emerged in our community and is at your disposal. Enjoy the remaining days of summer, and I look forward to seeing you at Dumont Day. Mayor Matthew P. McHale |

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program |
March 2007 Edition
Low income New Jersey seniors face the reality of having to pay for their rising utility costs. With that in mind, the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs has developed a program to educate seniors about the energy assistance programs available through the state and how to apply for them. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps directly pay for heating costs while the Universal Service Fund (USF) helps make utility bills affordable by providing a monthly credit on electric or natural gas bills or both. Receiving assistance from either of these programs will not affect the Lifeline benefit some seniors already receive. In fact, qualified individuals can receive all three! These is one application for both USF and LIHEAP which can be downloaded at www.nj.gov/dca/dcr/hea/index.shtml. The instructions cover how to complete the application and where to send it. There is an application deadline of March 31, 2007. Applicants can call DCA directly at 800-510-3102 with questions about the application process. If you have any questions about this program ar would like more information please contact the DCA office directly at (609) 292-6420. |

Mayor's State of the Borough Address: 1/4/07 |
March 2007 Edition
State of the Borough Address Presented by Mayor Matthew P. McHale January 4, 2007 Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Dumont Borough Hall. In 2006, the voters of Dumont chose to return Bob McQuade and Eric Abrahamsen to the Dumont Borough Council. They also chose to retain Harry Stylianou and Marty Caspare. Partisanship aside, they could not have made a wiser choice.
While these four men may be of the same party, as is the rest of this dais, they each bring with them qualities unique to their personalities. We do not always agree. Our focus and concerns may appear at times similar but is often different. The policies of this administration are formulated through discussion, compromising, and polishing. As this Borough’s Mayor, these men serve as a guide to me both personally and professionally. It is a great pleasure and honor to serve with men and women of such character, valor, and dedication. |
